I never expected my book to end up in a park!

When I illustrated by first children's book, Up and Down on a Rainy Day, it never crossed my mind that it would end up printed on signage to be enjoyed while strolling through a park. That was until earlier this month...

Tales & Trails is an outdoor reading experience developed by Ipswich Libraries. Each trail features books from the Stories for Little Queenslanders series, published by the State Library of Queensland. The pages of the book are spread along the walk and the inclusion of braille allows even more people to enjoy the story.

Up and Down on a Rainy Day, written by Kathryn Apel and illustrated by yours truly, was the latest title to be launched. I had the pleasure of attending the launch and ran a hybrid craft/meet and greet activity on the day. Safe to say I was exhausted by enjoyed every moment of it.

The activity was designed around a scene from the book where the family is having fun at the dam. One of the activities they are enjoying is making "barky boats" (boats made from bark, twigs and leaves) and racing them on the dam. The kids throughly enjoyed decorating their boats and were most excited by floating (or sinking in many cases) their boats on the water table.

While running the activity, it was also a pleasure to introduce myself as the illustrator of the book and chat about what inspired the story. It was an absolute joy to see how much they enjoyed the book.

Tales & Trails will be at The Workshops Rail Museum until November 2022.
